OVERVIEW

The STEM Education and Career Pathways Initiative aims to address the education gap among underprivileged youth in Aurora, IL, by providing access to high-quality STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and opportunities for career advancement. By inspiring and empowering young individuals from diverse backgrounds, the program seeks to create a pipeline of skilled workers prepared to succeed in the STEM workforce of the future.

 

STATISTICS AND DEMOGRAPHICS

Minority students, particularly Hispanic and African American youth, are underrepresented in STEM fields due to disparities in access to quality education and resources.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, only 16% of African American students and 20% of Hispanic students graduate from high school having taken advanced math courses, compared to 34% of white students.

 

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

STEM Enrichment Workshops: Hands-on workshops and activities will engage participants in various STEM disciplines, fostering curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking skills.

Mentorship and Role Model Engagement: Participants will have the opportunity to interact with STEM professionals from diverse backgrounds, serving as mentors and role models to inspire and guide them on their educational and career journeys.

College and Career Exploration: The program will provide resources and support to help participants explore college and career options in STEM fields, including assistance with college applications, financial aid, and internships.

Community Partnerships: Collaboration with local schools, libraries, and community organizations will ensure the program reaches under-served youth in Aurora and provides equitable access to STEM education opportunities.

 

IMPACT AND OUTCOMES

Increase representation of underprivileged youth, particularly minorities, in STEM fields, thereby closing the education and opportunity gap.

Empower participants to pursue higher education and rewarding careers in STEM, leading to increased earning potential and socioeconomic mobility.
